If you own an Android phone there’s a good chance you’re going to need to print a document or photo at some point. Android phones are excellent pieces of technology, and as such, give users quite a few options when it comes to connecting to printers. Here are a few of the easiest ways to print from an Android phone to an HP printer.

Printing With Android via OTG

The first option you have when trying to print with an android phone is to connect your phone via OTG.

Must have:

  • HP Printer (Powered On)
  • Android Device 4.0+ that supports OTG
  • HP Print Service Plugin installed
  • OTG Cable
  1. 1. Connect the USB (Male) of the printer to the USB (female) socket of the OTG cable.
  2. 2. Connect the OTG cable to Android Device
  3. 3. A pop up will appear on your android screen, tap the option to select the HP Print Service Plugin as default then tap ok.

Now you can open the file that you want to print. For photos, tap the photo you would like to print, select the drop-down menu and select print. You will now see the print preview of the photo. Tap on the dropdown menu and select the printer that you connected via USB.

You can expand the setting menu before printing the photo if you want to make any changes with the print settings. Tap print when ready.

Connect Android via Network using HP Print Service Plugin

Must have:

  • HP Printer (Powered On)
  • Android Device that is connected to the same network as the printer
  • HP Print Service Plugin installed
  • Printing section on Android device in settings (Turned On)

Now you can open the file that you want to print. For photos, tap the photo you would like to print, select the drop-down menu and select print. Tap on the dropdown menu and select the printer that you connected via USB.

You can make changes with the print settings before printing. Tap print when ready.

Connect Android via Network using HP SMART

Must have:

  • HP Printer (Powered On)
  • Android Device that is connected to the same network as the printer
  • Active internet connection
  • HP SMART application installed
  • HP Print Service Plugin application installed

Tap to open HP Smart. Review the agreement and check the box if you agree to the terms of the application, then tap start.

Make sure that the printer is in Set-Up mode to detect the printer in HP Smart.

For printers with buttons only:

Press and hold the cancel and wireless button for 5 seconds then release to reset the wireless network settings and turn on the setup mode.

Printers with LCD/text display:

Go to wireless and network settings menu then select restore network settings/restore network defaults.

Tango/Tango X printers:

Press and hold the wifi bottom for 5 seconds until the edge light turns blue

The wifi button is usually located at the back of the printer.

Printers with touchscreen menus:

Go to Wireless Setup Wizard and connect your printer to the network.

HP Smart Setup

Once the printer is connected to the network, return to HP Smart App on your android device and tap the plus sign to add your printer. It will take a few seconds for the printer to be detected. If the printer is not listed, tap Set Up a New Printer then select your printer.

The app may ask for the network password. Input the password if so and tap continue.

HP Smart will now find the printer, prepare for connection and gather additional data then finishes the connection. Once finished, tap continue.

NOTE: Unlike using only HP Print Service Plugin, HP smart allows you to view and print your files directly in the HP Smart application which can be very convenient.
