If you have a Canon printer, there will come a time where you need to figure out just how much ink is left. No cartridge lasts forever, and the last thing anyone wants to deal with is an empty ink cartridge when they need to print an important document. Understanding how much ink you have left helps you forecast when you need to buy new printer ink or toner.

Depending on the specific printer, there could be a few ways to check the levels of your color and black ink. We will discuss two methods on how to check your ink levels in this article.

Before getting started, make sure that your printer is connected to your laptop or computer when attempting to check the ink levels. There should be an ink cartridge installed on the printer whether there is ink left, low or empty. Once everything is ready, you are good to go.

1. Check Ink Levels Via Control Panel Settings

Type “control panel” in the search box and click the control panel app. You can press Windows Key + S to show the search box if it is hidden.

In the Control Panel Setting, look for Hardware and Sound section and click on “View devices and printers”. You will then see a list of connected devices or devices that have been connected to your network system. You will see a few sections, click the Printer section for this case.

In this section, you will see a list of printers that are connected or have been connected to your computer/laptop and other printer setting options.

Go to the printer settings of the printer that you would like to check and look for the option to check your printer ink levels to see how much ink is left.

NOTE: The printer or machine considers the cartridge full when installed then calculates the remaining ink. If you installed a used Cartridge, the ink level shown for the remaining ink may be incorrect.

2. Check Ink Levels Via Printer Software

Things to get started

  • Power on your computer/laptop and your printer
  • Installed printer software

Make sure that your printer is connected to your laptop or computer when attempting to check the ink levels. There should be an ink cartridge installed on the printer whether there is ink left, low or empty. Once everything is ready, you are good to go.

NOTE: Almost every printer brand has its own printer software. It may come with the package as a CD, if not, you can simply download the printer software on their official website.

Launch your Canon printer software (Canon IJ). You can utilize the search option if needed to quickly find the software.

On the maintenance tab, search for “View Printer Status” and click it. There you should be able to see the estimated ink levels of your printer. If the ink estimation is not shown, you can click on “ink Details” for more info.

NOTE: If there is a mark on top of the estimated ink levels it means that your ink is running low and you may have to replace your ink cartridge soon.
